Balancing Work as a New Mom

Finding a Groove

Becoming a new mom can feel like a whirlwind. In those early days, it can feel incredibly overwhelming. You're suddenly learning everything about this tiny human, and it often feels like there aren't enough hours in the day, even for simple things like feeding yourself, let alone getting anything done around the house. I felt that way until I finally found our groove. Stay patient as it can take some time until you get used to things, but I promise, it does get easier.

Building Structure into the Day

For me, structure and routine were a high priority and once we developed some structure into our day, it was an absolute game-changer. While the newborn stage makes a routine almost impossible, as soon as my little one moved past that, I knew I needed to get him on a consistent nap and bedtime schedule. Not only would this benefit him, but I knew it would benefit me as well. Another priority for my husband and me was helping our baby learn to sleep independently and gradually self-soothe, so he wouldn’t rely on us every time he woke up during the night or at nap time. I believe this led to him being an amazing sleeper. Sleep is important, not only for your little one but for the parents too!

Working Smarter Not Harder

I returned to working full time when my little one was 12 weeks old. This felt like perfect timing because he had just started sleeping almost through the entire night and I began a naptime schedule for him throughout the day that worked for us both. Now, I make the most of naptime by tackling tasks that require my full focus. Personally, I like to plan out most of my phone calls during these nap windows. Of course, it doesn't always work out perfectly, but I've learned to lean on tools and technology more than I ever have before. Utilizing the right tools, allows me to multitask and save precious time.

Creating To-Do Lists

Another key to balancing work and motherhood is creating to-do lists and prioritizing tasks. I’m constantly jotting down tasks I need to accomplish, along with simple everyday reminders. I have found that by doing this, it holds me accountable and keeps me on track. Instead of rigid daily schedules, I set weekly completion dates for my tasks that need to be accomplished. This flexibility is a lifesaver with a five-month-old, as no two days are ever the same.

Relying on Trusted Loved Ones

Being able to lean on family for childcare is another way to be able to balance being a working mom. Not only does it provide help to be able to fully focus on work, but it also provides peace of mind. Knowing your child is in safe, trusted hands makes it easier to focus on work and reduces stress or anxiety. If you can’t rely on family, then find someone who you trust with your child because it can make a huge difference to your day and how you feel.

Honesty is the Best Policy

Lastly, open and honest communication with your employer is crucial. It’s so important to speak up about your workload and be honest about what is or isn’t manageable. Transparency is key when it comes to managing work. Thankfully, my employer values openness and honestly as much as I do. Having a strong support system helps immensely!
